The name of Britney Spears new album, Circus, couldn't be more appropriate. After a year's worth of sideshows (hospital trips, court appearances, beach vacations), this is the main event for the pop singer, who celebrates her 27th birthday today, the same day the album drops. Spears's appearances in USA TODAY's Celebrity Heat Index that measures media exposure reveals that interest in her has remained high through the ups and downs of 2008. For 23 weeks, she has been among the top 3 stories, spending 10 of those weeks at No. 1, and she is on track to be the most popular celebrity on the index for the year, ahead of Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston.

January
•Spears ranks No. 1 on the index three weeks in a row after she was taken Jan. 3 to the psych ward of Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles. The hospital stay, which lasts only a few nights, takes place after Spears displays erratic behavior when ex-husband Kevin Federline's bodyguard attempts to pick up toddler sons Sean Preston and Jayden James from her house. She drops from the top spot at the end of the month after reports of Angelina Jolie's possible pregnancy and Heath Ledger's death.
